Cut That Sugar Out!

Milk and sugar? One lump or two? Try ZERO! Making the decision to cut out sugar is not an easy one. Mainly because most people aren't aware of how many food and beverage items have added sugar. So, what's the difference between added sugar and natural sugar? Well my friends, I'm happy to explain this to you!

Refined sugar, or sucrose, comes from sugar cane or sugar beets which are processed to extract the sugar. Key word there, P R O C- E S S E D. Natural sugars are found in fruit and even in dairy products like milk and cheese. How does the body react to one vs the other?

With refined sugar, the body breaks this down rapidly which causes insulin and blood sugar levels to dramatically increase. Because this is digested quickly, you don't feel full after you're done eating. It's easy to see how refined sugar has been linked to the rise in obesity rates, which can lead to more severe health problems.

Natural sources of sugar are digested slower and help you feel full longer. It also helps keep your metabolism stable.

Now, how to make the switch? Like I stated before, this isn't an easy decision but knowledge is power! Once you know the difference between cane sugar (table sugar) and natural sugar, it does get easier to make healthier choices. Below is a list of natural sugars that I've used to replace cane sugar, as well as items to swap out right away and start living a healthier lifestyle!

  • To sweeten my baked goods, I use raw organic honey or coconut sugar.

  • I also use honey to sweeten my tea, hot or cold (honey is jam packed with nutrients, antioxidants and is better for blood sugar levels)

  • Stop drinking soda and energy drinks! Switch to water and add some fresh fruit for flavor!

  • Xylitol, a natural sugar substitute is a good alternative compared to other artificial sweeteners. Xylitol is found in the fibers of many fruits and vegetables so it is a natural resource.

  • READ THE LABELS! Cane sugar isn't only added to those sinful cookies you have stashed away. It can be found in bread, pasta, pre cooked rice, the sky is the limit.

Are you ready to make the change?
