Wrist mobility is so important and here's why!
Our wrists makes our day to day activities possible and we often take it for granted. Without adequate mobility and strength, they become more vulnerable to injuries and pain.
A year ago, I took group workout classes that involved a lot of exercises where I'm in a plank position, such as push ups, mountain climbers and burpees. I noticed that my wrists started to hurt after an extended amount of time and I would rather do a push up on my knuckles because bending them would be too painful. The concept of strengthening my wrist did not come to mind. I thought it would be better to stay off my wrist in order to prevent injury. However, how can I get stronger if I don't practice and move my wrist more frequently?
Over the summer, I worked with a new trainer and we've have implemented 10 mins of mobility exercises before beginning the workouts. I've learned that wrist tension can be attributed to a limited range of motion plus a lack of blood flow to the joint. We use our wrists for so many day to day activities such as lifting, gripping, bending and twisting. With so much physical demand, it's essential to strengthen the wrist and keep it healthy. After a few months of being consistent, I've noticed a major difference in my training and day to day activities. Now, I have so much more range of motion and strength due to stretching it each day.
The video above is a really great follow along that will teach you the different movements and will provide more information. Over the course of a few weeks, you'll notice that your wrists are stronger and have more flexibility. I know it might seem boring but 5 - 10 mins of your time each day is a great investment for your future self!
